Official Convocation Dress Code

The Convocation Ceremony of NIT Meghalaya is a prestigious academic occasion that reflects the dignity, achievements, and institutional identity of the Institute. To maintain uniformity, elegance, and a formal academic atmosphere, awardees are advised to follow the prescribed attire guidelines. The dress code has been prepared keeping in view the climatic conditions, comfort of students, and the overall ceremonial aesthetics.

Students may choose any one of the prescribed attire options depending on the prevailing weather and personal comfort, while ensuring the overall appearance remains formal, graceful, and suitable for an academic ceremony.

General Guidelines

Awardees are advised to wear elegant attire that reflects warmth, sophistication, academic dignity, and handcrafted elegance appropriate for a formal academic occasion.

Attire should preferably be made from fabrics that provide comfort and elegance.
The overall appearance must remain formal, neat, and suitable for ceremonial proceedings.
Layered silhouettes and refined tailoring are encouraged, while maintaining simplicity and elegance, subtle handcrafted detailing and minimalistic aesthetics.
The attire should ensure comfort during extended ceremonial sessions, stage appearances, movements and photography sessions.

Preferred Colour Palette

For both male and female awardees, the attire should be in any one of the following shades only:

White
Off-white
Cream

Students are expected to maintain a neat, dignified, and professional appearance throughout the convocation ceremony.

Recommended Attire — Male Awardees

Students may choose any of the following or similar styles:

Bandhgala with churidar
Nehru jacket with kurta and churidar
Kurta with a formal coat
Ethnic fusion attire with straight trousers
Formal attire with simple handcrafted detailing

Recommended Attire — Female Awardees

Students may choose any of the following or similar styles:

Saree with an elegant shawl
Layered kurta set with a structured long jacket
Traditional state attires, Dhara / Dakmanda / Jainsem
Textured ethnic formal wear with a graceful drape
Formal ensemble with refined handcrafted detailing

Important Instructions for Convocation Attire

To maintain the dignity, decorum, and uniformity of the Convocation Ceremony, awardees are advised to strictly adhere to the prescribed dress guidelines. The attire should reflect professionalism, elegance, and academic discipline appropriate for an official institutional event.

Students are advised to avoid the following:

Casual footwear such as slippers, flip-flops, crocs, floaters, or sports sandals
Distressed, faded, ripped, or overly casual clothing
Flashy colours, glittery fabrics, or excessive embroidery and embellishments
T-shirts, hoodies, denim jackets, cargo pants, shorts, or athleisure wear
Sports shoes with bright colours or casual sneakers not suited for formal occasions
Caps, hats, or non-ceremonial headgear unless approved for cultural or medical reasons
Clothing with large logos, slogans, printed graphics, or promotional content
Untidy, wrinkled, or inappropriate attire inconsistent with the formal nature of the ceremony

Awardees are expected to maintain a neat, graceful, and professional appearance throughout the convocation proceedings.
