The Computer Training Center for Visually Impaired Persons is dedicated to providing individuals with visual impairments the knowledge and skills required to thrive in today's digital world. The center aims to empower visually impaired learners by opening doors to education, employment, and independent living through accessible computer training.
The center is equipped with Braille-enabled computer systems and assistive technologies that make learning more accessible. These facilities, combined with personalized instruction, enable students to develop confidence in using computers for academic, professional, and personal purposes.
The training center was officially inaugurated in June 2024 at the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Meghalaya in the presence of Shri Sunil Alagh (Board of Governor), his wife Maya Alagh, Prof. Pinakeswar Mahanta (Director of NITM) and other distinguished guests, faculty members, and officials. The inauguration marked an important milestone in promoting inclusive education and equal learning opportunities for persons with visual impairments.
The program currently enrols students with different levels of visual impairment. Over a three-month training period, participants learn essential computer applications and digital skills required for higher education and employment. The curriculum progresses from basic computer operations to more advanced topics at a pace suited to each learner.
To facilitate learning, the center uses NVDA (NonVisual Desktop Access), an open-source screen reader that allows visually impaired users to interact with Windows computers through speech feedback. Students learn keyboard orientation, desktop navigation, file management, and the use of standard office applications such as Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel without relying on visual interfaces.
As students become familiar with keyboard shortcuts and navigation techniques, the training gradually shifts toward document creation, formatting, data entry, spreadsheet operations, and other practical computing tasks. These skills improve learners' confidence and prepare them for academic and professional environments.
The experience demonstrates that, with the right technology, accessible teaching methods, and dedicated support, visually impaired individuals can overcome barriers to digital learning. The center stands as a testament to the importance of inclusive education and the belief that everyone deserves equal opportunities to learn, grow, and contribute meaningfully to society.
India Suffers from a severe shortage of trained paramedical personnel Allied Health Professionals (AHP). On this backdrop, school for Skills (SFS) Academies, an academic institution for AHPs was established in 2013 in West Bengal. It was founded by specialist doctors with in-depth experience of the health sector and expectations from AHP.
